Polish MEPs will participate in the hearings for Henna Virkkunen, the candidate for Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy.
Our team proposed a question on securing the protection of the digital civic space and ensuring the independence of political content decisions. We are satisfied to see that this issue has been initially addressed in the Written Questionnaire.
We will be tuning in on November 12th to learn more about transparent content moderation and efforts to ensure equal access to political content for all European citizens.
CEE Digital Democracy Watch full statement:
Members of the European Parliament face a significant task that will delineate the shape and direction of actions for the new European Commission’s term over the next five years. As a non-governmental organisation, we are particularly monitoring the further development of the Digital Services Act in terms of limiting harmful content, as well as proceedings concerning the ambiguous restriction of access to political content, disinformation, and political advertisements.
In the Mission Statement, we observe the results of our efforts towards a European Democratic Shield, which aims to unify the European approach to protecting the digital civic space and to ensure the preservation of democratic standards online as well.
This is a valuable initiative, and we trust it will continue to develop. Simultaneously, we hope that it will maintain its political impartiality, as well as a clear division of responsibilities between Member States and EU bodies.
For this reason, we propose the following question for the candidate for Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen:
How do you intend to secure independence and quality of European Democracy Shield given the varying levels of digital infrastructure and expertise across EU Member States?
