CONSULTATIONS: Guidance for new EU rules on political advertising

Digital Democracy Watch shared extensive comments on the draft Guidance for the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2024/900 on the transparency and targeting of political advertising during the public consultations process organised by European Commission. While the Regulation has potential to be a big step toward fairer, more transparent elections, we note that the Guidance draft leaves important gaps and call for several improvements. Some provisions could unintentionally discourage civic engagement, while unclear definitions might create confusion about what counts as political advertising. Besides contributing to the Commission’s consultations, we also shared our comments with relevant implementing bodies in the region.

Clearer guidance is needed so that both citizens and institutions across Europe share a common understanding of this important regulation.
